Representation
Representation is showing a certain topic view, or demographic in a piece of work.
I will talk about my music video,
My music video Is focused more about mental health, the lyrics and title of the song "where is my mind," are the main incentive for this. I think that it represents the struggle of having mental health issues quite well, portraying how there can be struggles between both happy and darker thoughts in a person's head.
Archetype: normal or typical of a person or thing.
Music video:
How are my ant and pro portrayed?
They want the pro to be ok.
They are wearing normal clothes, so the audience can identify with the pro.
Binary Oppositions:
Binary oppositions in my music video:
"Hero vs Villain"
Binary opposition - Claude Levi-Strauss:
A theory of meaning,
Says 'We know what something is by what it is definitely not. We rely on fixed relationships between opposing ideas'.
Binary opposites drive a text forward, without them then there wouldn't be a story
Feminism:
Portrayals:
'Dizzy Blonde'
Housewife
Sexual attraction/distraction
Mulvey - The Male Gaze:
Believes that society is patriarchal,
Also believes that men have 'active' roles and women have 'passive' roles.
Traditions:
Men far outnumber women,
Female roles are sidelined,
Lead roles for women are scarce.
Voyeuristic: a view objectifying women,
Fetishistic: sexualising women visually.
Mulvey argued that women are given two character types, 'sexually active female' and 'powerless female'.
Films presented images of women that were presented simply for male viewers.
'Post-feminism':
Reappraisal of feminist values,
Doesn't strive for equality as this assumes that men are the best.
Judith Butler:
Argues we learn to perform as boys or girls from family, society, media representations and historical attitudes.
